Selenomethionine

Yeast-free, biologically-active chelated selenium for superior bioavailability

Selenium is a mineral that’s essential to more than two dozen types of proteins in our bodies, including those used in the liver’s blood detoxification processes and by the immune system. It’s an important fat-soluble antioxidant, protecting fats from damage by oxidation.

About Selenomethionine

Selenium is also involved in the production and recycling of the antioxidant glutathione, which is used by the immune system for fighting harmful free radicals, viruses and abnormal cells. This is especially important in protection against the damaging effects of inflammation, which is an underlying process in coronary artery disease and many other health conditions. Selenium is vital to proper thyroid hormone metabolism, reproduction, and DNA synthesis, helping ensure the maintenance of good health.

Why supplement selenium? Pollution exposure, agricultural practices and even dietary factors can warrant the need for increased selenium intake. Brazil nuts grown in virgin-forest soils are by far the highest food source of selenium, offering more than 5 times the content per serving than other foods that contain the mineral. But with today’s intensive farming practices, trace minerals are no longer found in soils in the quantities they once were. This equates to a food supply that’s generally very low in selenium.

Pure Lab’s Selenomethionine provides 200 micrograms per capsule of a superior, more bioavailable form of selenium with an absorption rate of 90 percent (compared to 50% for sodium selenite). Rather than sourced from potentially allergenic food proteins like yeast, our selenium is obtained from mineral deposits and then chelated (attached) to a single amino acid.

By chelating selenium to methionine, selenomethionine forms and becomes the body’s preferred, biologically active form of selenium that’s ready for immediate use by the body. The added benefits? Methionine is an essential amino acid, a source of sulfur for our body and functions as an antioxidant itself. Plus, methionine also helps detoxify heavy metals from the body and may help prevent fat deposits in the liver.
